Day 4 Valletta, Malta

Embark on a narrated tour of Valletta, capital of Malta and a city replete with medieval charm and extravagantly grand architecture. No exploration would be complete without a visit to Valletta’s crowning jewel, St. John’s Co-Cathedral. This baroque masterpiece was commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere for the Knights of St John. In fact, several Knights donated gifts of art to ensure it was adorned with only the finest works. Enjoy a little free time to explore the area’s charming shops and cafes.

Day 5 Syracuse, Sicily, Italy

Travel back millennia to the days when Syracuse was a mighty Greek city, then, fast forward to the Middle Ages. It’s a tale that begins in 734 B.C. and lives on at Neapolis Archaeological Park. Explore this incredible collection of ruins left behind by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Stand inside the Roman amphitheater, hewn from rock in the 2nd century AD, and see the gateway where gladiators and wild beasts once entered to do battle in the name of entertainment. Discover the medieval epoch of Syracuse with a guided walk through Ortigia, the Old Town. Stroll along cobbled ways and meander through charming squares that open to the Ionian Sea. Stop at Arethusa Fountain, legendary cradle of the city. Conclude with some free time to peruse the lovely shops and cafes that now claim their place along these ancient streets.

Day 6 Taormina, Italy

Enjoy a delightful day exploring one of Sicily’s favorite treasures, the town of Taormina, perched high above the sea on a panoramic plateau. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk through cobblestone ways that are simply brimming with medieval ambiance. Stroll over to the Palazzo Corvaja, a 15th-century masterpiece boasting classic double windows. Continue with a visit to the ancient Greek Theater, boasting such perfect acoustics it’s still used for open-air performances today. Weather permitting, towering Mount Etna will be clearly visible in the distance, as your guide regales you with tales of Taormina’s past, including its almost complete renovation under the Roman Empire. After the guided portion of the tour, enjoy some free time to explore on your own. Go inside regal churches, browse the local shops, pop into a lively pub or café, or, simply stroll about town and soak up its captivating old-world charm.

Day 7 Amalfi, Italy (on own)

The Amalfi Coast is considered to be one of Italy’s finest! You will be enchanted by the rich hues of the blue green sea, the tiny mystical islands and the pastel colored cottages gathered round tiny harbors! A glorious maritime republic from the 9th to 12th centuries, the town is also famous as the place where the compass was invented and boasts a splendid Duomo in Arab-Norman style.

Day 8 Pompeii, Italy

Walk amid the ruins of one of the world’s truly epic wonders, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. This archaeological discovery has fascinated the world for ages, becoming the subject of film and books alike. This tour travels inside the lost city for a guided exploration of its ancient temples and porticoes. Explore a world that bustled with activity until a fateful day in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius exploded in a cataclysm of fire and ash, burying the city in an instant. Lost for 1,700 years beneath 30 feet of cinder, it now stands resurrected and seemingly alive with ghosts of the past. Witness the famous casts of ancient citizens frozen in their volcanic tombs. See the ruins of grand mansions, once home to wealthy patricians. Experience the remains of a day when time stopped for an entire city on a tour that’s nothing less than legendary.
